Orphaned & Vulnerable Children include children who have no parents/guardians and children whose parents are unable to give them proper care. Vulnerable children may run the risk of losing their parents/guardians as a result of illness, death, poverty, or abandonment.
==These are testimonies hand written by the Children when asked to write about their life before and after Great Mercy. We then transcribed it for the website and took out personal information.==
My name is Esther Nanjala. I am sixteen years old. I came to Great mercy in the year 2002. I am in Form 3 (Highschool Junior). As an orphan, I have been supported and helped as if I was a person who has both parents.
The death of my father left me hopeless and undetermined. As I was taken to the children’s office, I was brought to this wonderful and beautiful place. I had negative attitude towards life. It took time to change my unwilling heart on education. The caretakers and teachers did their best to make sure I change to a positive attitude towards education. I am brave and a good performer in class now.
Since I have the key to my bright future, I am reading and doing my best to be an engineer. I am ready to help, especially my brothers and sisters who are together here at Great Mercy. I know with the support you would grant me would not only change my life, but through me, thousands of people will also be transformed. Please touch a child’s heart
I am called Joy. I am in class 6. I am very happy to be told to write the story of my life because I know if you read this, I know you care and love us.
I was born in September 2000. I was been taken of both parents but when my sister was born, only my mother could provide for us everything. My father said he was going to Nairobi to get a job so he could sent some money for us. We waited and waited but he could not send even a single shilling. From there we were taken by my mother’s sister. We came here to Great Mercy. He even did not care for us, my real father of the same blood. He was a drunkard man. All he was payed, he would just drink alcohol. Soon from there, we knew he could come to abandon us. All these came true. My mother was just convinced to go to a children’s office. When she went there she was told to wait and when they call her, she should go.
On the day of the case, me and my sister were told to play outside. My mother and father were talked to. My father promised that he will be sending money to the children’s office and we would be going to take money every month. When all was over, everyone went to their homes a week later and we heard that my father had left his job because he did not want to send money. We have been living this home since 2005. I have just experienced so many things. I have experienced some children’s story. Many are orphans, some are abandoned and some have both parents. I love Great Mercy very much and it is just like my home. I have learned so many things that I did not know. I thank God because he has a purpose on why I am here. May God bless the work of Mummy and Daddy’s hands.
– Yours faithfully,
My name is Valentine. I am 16 years old born in July of 1997. I am a Form 3 student (Junior in Highschool) at Great Mercy. The reason why I came to Great Mercy is because my mother and my father divorced when I was still young. By that time I was about four or five years old. Since then my father refused to support my mother in bringing me up. My mother has been the bread winner until when I was in class eight where by she was unable to pay for my school fees because she was taking care of my grandmother who was admitted in the hospital. So I was brought to Great Mercy to continue with my studies. I did my K.C.P.E. and tried my best after staying at home for around one and a half months. Though I was above average, I was not contented with the marks and I came back to rewind. I was encouraged and I was told that the marks were good so I was promoted to Form 1. I have been here for 3 and a half years and I thank God and the founder of this school because I do not think I could have been in Form 3 because my mother could not pay for my school fees after being abandoned by my father. The money my mother gets is little to cater for all the needs.
I have learned that our past shapes us but we still have the choice to determine what we wish to accept or reject. We are all formed and forged by circumstances of life but we aren’t just victims tossed here and there with no will. We cannot keep blaming others for what we haven’t achieved. I have come to a place where I have taken responsibility for who I am and will determine how my past has shaped me.
Thanks be to God and Great Mercy for all. It has helped me learn a lot in the life I have been able to interact with many people from different places. In the future, I would like to be a lawyer and also help others not forgetting the founders of Great Mercy. May God bless them abundantly. I know I am capable and I am here for a special reason and a special purpose because I am special.
May God bless Great Mercy and may the founders of this school love to see the fruits of their labour.
My name is Christopher. I am 12 years old and I am a boy. I come from Kissii. I grew up from a family of five children of Mr and Mrs Momanyi. I grew from a poor background which was not rich enough to provide education for us. They tried tooth and nail till we grew up.
They struggled to provide basic needs till my elder brother and sisters finished their schools. When it reached my turn, that is when my father started drinking alcohol. Though he was taking alcohol, we were alive. That is when the time reached and the domestic violence rose. It made my mother return back to her original home together with me as her last born.
My mother worked hard looking for money for me to learn. As I was in class seven, I was promoted to class eight in the year 2011. As we were on the holiday in December, we received from my sister who was working in Kitale. I needed to come to school. I set off on the journey from home to here. They told me that the school I had come to was Great Mercy.
Since I stepped in Great Mercy I was blessed with Christianity. My performance was not so good, but not now I have improved. At Great Mercy I have experienced many things that I would have not seen in my life. The year has gone smartly without any problem till we have come to the end of the year as we are looking forwards to our examinations. May loving God bless the directors of Great Mercy as a home and as a school for the love that you have given us.
My name is Doreen. I came to Great mercy in the year 2006. Before I came to Great Mercy my father had died. After the death we were chased away and everything that belonged to us was taken away.
I was brought to Great Mercy because there was nobody to pay the school fees. I was then in the class three and I was like life had ended. I was taught, supported and encouraged by my teachers at Great Mercy.
I found out that being an orphan could not hinder me from learning and preforming well. I have gone through education and am now in high school. I have been influenced by other people and learned to live as an orphan.
When I grow up I want to become an air hostess. I am working hard to achieve my goal because I know nothing will hinder me from being an air hostess even if I am an orphan. I also want to love and care for someone else as I have been loved and care for at Great Mercy.
My name is Francis John. I am a boy and I am from Great Mercy. I am 11 years old and I am a Standard four pupil (4th grade). I would like to say that Great Mercy is a good school for an orphan. I came in Great Mercy in the year of 2010. When I was eight years old and I was a street boy. In Great Mercy I have gone through many challenges but I have not given up. And Great Mercy has helped me so much. I was number one Standard Four with 354 marks. Great Mercy is my home that I love so much and cant forget it. Great Mercy has given me the free education, good, clothes, and stationary. I love Mummy and Daddy because they are like parents. I love Great Mercy so much. I usually cry for my Lord that one day I would like a good life that anybody will not be disturbing me. And feel pain when somebody is trying to talk bad things about Great Mercy and thank God that there is nobody talk bad about Great Mercy, even if it is a small school. I come to Great Mercy to learn and not disturb. And in my life I have gone through difficult challenges and now have many friends at Great Mercy.
In my future I would like to become an Engineer of an airplane.
My name is Grace Wangeri. I am a girl aged seventeen. I was born on the 24th of December. I have taken this opportunity to thank you for what you have done to me. Surely you have done great things to me. Even I don’t know what to say. Because when I looked back in my life, I feel like crying because my father passed away in 2007. My mother struggled with us.
When I first came to this school it was very difficult for me to forget what happened in our home, what my mother is going through. But I remember on Saturday my first day to come to this church. Mom told us forget about your past things that you are going through, forget it and look forward. just build you life for tomorrow. That word touched me and I say I am not going to look back again.
Then I learned here for about one week. I said to myself surely this is the school God chose for me because I have worked in many schools and I have never seen such a mother because she is giving you everything that you want. She has sacrificed her self, giving you so many things. Even she is spending her money buying for us food, clothes, shoes, and so many things. Even sometimes she can give us books, pencils, pens for writing and it is all for free.
She has helped us in many ways. She normally calls her friend from far away to come and stay with us, giving us advice for how to stay and to live a good life. I want to assure you that one day I will do many things in this school and I am sure and I have faith and confidence I am going to. It is because god said if you believe in him every thing could be possible. I will always remember Great Mercy even if I am inside the country or outside. I will remember this school and for the great people that I have left behind.
My name is Domnick. I was born in 1997, and my parents died when I was 1.5 years of age. After that happened, I lived with my aunt. Not long after that, her husband died, and she then brought me to my grandfather, who looked after me from 2005 to 2006. My aunt cared for me again from 2006 to 2007. My grandfather told her that she wasn’t taking good care of me, suggesting that she was unable to do so. She was discouraged and left me to live on the streets from 2007 to 2010. One night, I was arrested by the police for sleeping on the streets. The police sometimes brings kids to the Rescue Center to get them off the street, which is what happened to me. I stayed at the Rescue Center for about 2 months. Part of their job is to get children into centers for education and housing. I was brought to Great Mercy, where they gave me housing, food, education, and the word of God.
Great Mercy changed my life forever. I would like to finish Form 4, get licensed to drive, and then attend a university to learn about surgery and medicine. I hope to attend a university in the United States near 2016-2017.
My name is Henry, and I was born in 1992. As a child, it was difficult for my parents to pay my school fees. I stayed at home for 2 years because we could not afford to continue paying school fees. Then my parents got funding again and I was able to attend school until Class 7. I was brought to Great Mercy in Class 8 after someone came to my school and said 2 people may come to join Great Mercy. They discussed it with my mother, and decided I should come to Great Mercy. I passed the KCP National Exam in 2010, then studied about 2 months at home before I came to Great Mercy to continue my Secondary education.
When I finish Form 4, I would like to return home and do experiments with crops. After the results, I would like to join Jomo Kenyatta University to study Agricultural Technology.
